Vectrus Fire Protection Engineer in Kuwait

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs professional engineering work to protect life and property. This work includes assessment and prediction of fire hazards or risks, mitigation of fire damage by proper design, construction, and arrangement of facilities, design, construction, inspection, testing, and operation of fire detection and fire suppression apparatus, appliances, devices, and systems, and assessment of fire protection requirements. This position helps prevent, identify, and mitigate fire hazards to detect, control, and suppress fire events. Consider the effects of fire on people, structures, commodities, and the continuity of operations identifies fire hazards and their risks, the cost of protection, and fire safety design, interpret, and promote fire safety codes and standards, use quantitative methods to assess aspects of fire and fire safety, and determine and apply scientific principles and theories of fire phenomena. Ensure compliance with Vectrus Performance Work Statement, Army Regulation 420-1 Army Facilities Management, Area Support Group-Kuwait (Army) policies as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards as prescribed by DoD instructions, Army regulations, and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC’s).

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

  1. Applies Fire Protection Engineering work that generates the application of theories, principles, practical concepts, processes, and methods of fire prevention and fire phenomena related to, fire protection engineering science, engineering design, and design or evaluation of the designs of integrated systems involving suppression, detection, and electrical and electronic alarm systems, design standards and codes for fire protection engineering techniques and practices, human responses to emergency situations, fire tests and measurements, and system concepts of fire safety and methods of analysis and evaluation.

  2. Design overall fire protection systems, conduct investigations into post fire incidents, and provide specifications for building construction, exit and egress means, and mechanical systems. Examines the nature and characteristics of fire phenomena and the associated products of combustion. Determines how fires originate, spread, and are detected, controlled, and/or extinguished. Work includes the anticipation and prediction of fire behavior on materials, structures, machines, and apparatus to protect life and property.

  3. Provide fire protection and system safety engineering technical leadership, criteria and code interpretation, design and construction quality assurance, training and mentoring in the areas of fire prevention and systems safety design to initial planning team (IPT) architectural, engineering and project management staff within the Army Department of Public Works, the Vectrus Public Works Department, and the Fire Department. Also provides project management leadership and coordination within IPT, and communicate acceptable technical fire protection engineering and design requirements and performance standards to Architect Engineering (A-E) firms providing contract services.
  4. Utilize established guidelines to plan, formulate, and implement fire protection engineering strategies, goals, and program instructions. Serve as team lead for fire protection engineering support surveys and acceptance tests conducted on new and rehabilitated fire protection engineering systems. Review and evaluate project designs to ensure drawings, specifications, and supporting documents needed for projects are correct. Review designs of new and modified facilities throughout various stage of development to assure compliance with the NFPA Life Safety Codes and ensure various fire protection design criteria are met. Prepare Fire Protection design and construction documents, for new and renovation projects to various types of facilities, using the latest technological design and drafting tools. Determine work priorities and schedules for meeting milestones within time limitations.

MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

A valid stateside driver's license and the ability to obtain a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator's license, and Kuwait Driver’s license are needed to facilitatetravel throughout all of Kuwait to support Vectrus and US Army projects and site visits.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is generally conducted in an office environment with many outdoor activities to include site visits at ASG installations throughout Kuwait. Will involve working outside with potential exposure to extreme high temperatures, and dry and dusty conditions.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Work may require moderate lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, and prolonged sitting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.

Secret security clearance is required for this position. Must have experience in design of fire protection and alarm systems, knowledge ofDoD standards, building codes and NFPA 101,withdesign project management experience. Must have a degree in Engineering (Fire Protection, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc.).Must meet one of the following criteria’s per UFC 3-600-01, A registered professional engineer (P.E.) who has passed the fire protection engineering written examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveys (NCEES) or a registered P.E. in a related engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience, dedicated to fire protection engineering that can be verified with documentation.

Experience:

Experience working with military engineering standards preferred. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following, serve as a technical authority on facilities fire protection and life safety; conduct and review designs for fire protection systems; apply knowledge of engineering/architectural fields to solve facility engineering issues/problems; and Inspect, test, and approve new and rehabilitated fire protection systems.

Skills:

Sound technical knowledge of DoD and UFC code requirements, as well as the applicable NFPA and ICC codes and standards for fire protection and life safety criteria, effective communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, articulate with professional presence, solid decision-making, planning, and organizational skills, must be able to work independently, without supervision, motivated, hard-working, team player with attention to detail, good computer skills in Word, Excel, AutoCAD experience desirable and other software needed to produce reports and designs.
